Check-In:
Start by connecting as a group:
- When you think of “family,” what’s one word or feeling that comes to mind?
- What is one thing you are grateful for about your family (past or present)?
High Level Sermon Summary:
This message reminded us that God has immeasurably more for our families, even though:
- Families are complex
- Families are imperfect
- And many of us carry pain, pressure, or responsibility in family relationships
The Bible shows that:
- Family was God’s idea (Genesis 1–2)
- Sin broke what God designed
- But Jesus redeems what sin broke
Because of Jesus:
- There may be no perfect family
- But there can be a redeemed family
The message then highlighted four key choices that help shape a healthy and God honouring family:
- We choose to be a God-first family
Putting Jesus first in priorities, decisions, and daily life - We choose to be an intentionally formed family
Family health doesn’t happen accidentally—it requires intentional investment
(Time, Touch, Talk, Traditions, Testimony) - We choose to be a grace-filled family
Extending forgiveness, patience, and grace to one another - We choose to be a generationally focused family
Living with legacy in mind and trusting God for what we cannot yet see
Ultimately, the message emphasised:
You may not be able to change the past, but by God’s grace you can choose what happens next.
Key Scriptures:
- Ephesians 3:20–21 – God is able to do immeasurably more
- Matthew 19:4–5 – God’s design for family
- Genesis 2:18 – Created for relationship
- Joshua 24:15 – “As for me and my household…”
- Matthew 6:33 – Seek first His kingdom
- Ephesians 5:15–16 – Live wisely and make the most of every opportunity
- Matthew 10:8 – Freely received, freely give
- Galatians 6:9 – Don’t grow weary in doing good
- Psalm 128 – A picture of flourishing family life
Discussion Questions:
- God-First Foundation
Joshua says, “As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”- What does being a God first family practically look like in everyday life?
- Intentional Over Accidental
Families don’t drift toward health—we have to be intentional.- Which of the “5 Ts” (Time, Touch, Talk, Traditions, Testimony) feels strongest in your family?
- Which one needs the most attention right now?
- Grace in Relationships
Grace often starts when someone chooses to go first.- Why is showing grace hardest within family relationships?
- What could “going first” look like for you right now?
- Generational Perspective
The message encouraged us not to give up and to think beyond today.- What kind of legacy do you want your life (and family) to leave?
Prayer Pointers:
Spend time praying intentionally:
- Healing: Pray for broken or strained family relationships
- Alignment: Ask God to help your family put Him first
- Grace: Pray for hearts that forgive and extend grace quickly
- Intentionality: Ask for wisdom to invest in what really matters
- Next Generation: Pray for children, future generations, and legacy
You can close with this declaration:
“Jesus, You are Lord over our families. Heal what is broken, strengthen what is weak, and lead us into the immeasurably more You have for us.”
