Sermon Summary:
As we close the Immeasurably More series, this message answers a foundational question: How is “immeasurably more” actually possible in our lives?
The answer is not through effort or striving – but “according to His power that is at work within us”. That power is the Holy Spirit, and this message uses the parable of the ten virgins (Matthew 25) to highlight a key truth: It’s not the lamp that matters most. It’s the oil.
- The lamp represents what is visible (our actions, serving, church life).
- The oil represents the hidden life (our intimacy with God, the Holy Spirit within us).
Three Key Insights:
- The Delay Reveals What is Inside Us
Waiting seasons don’t create emptiness. They reveal it.- Delays expose our fears, control, weariness, or faith.
- God uses these moments not to shame us, but to form us and meet us deeply.
- The Lamp is Visible, But the Oil is Hidden
- Many people can appear “ready” externally.
- But what sustains us is not activity. It’s intimacy with Jesus.
We can serve, show up and do the right things, but without the Holy Spirit filling us, we will run dry. The Christian life is not sustained by performance but by presence.
- Oil Cannot Be Borrowed. It Must Be Cultivated.
- You cannot live off someone else’s relationship with God.
- You cannot rely on past encounters or Sunday moments alone.
Fresh oil is cultivated by:
- Making space for God daily
- Prayer, worship, Scripture
- Surrender and honest repentance
We don’t produce the oil, but we create space for God to fill us.
Big Idea:
“Fresh oil is not found in looking busy for God, but in being with God.” To walk in “immeasurably more,” we don’t need better plans, more effort or more activity. We need the Holy Spirit.
Discussion Questions:
- The message says, “the delay reveals what is inside us.”
- Where might you be focusing more on the “lamp” (what people see) than the “oil” (your hidden life with God)?
- What does “cultivating oil” practically look like for you in this season?
- What is one simple way you can make more room for the Holy Spirit in your daily life this week?
Prayer Pointers:
- Invite the Holy Spirit to fill you afresh and renew your strength.
- Be honest with God about areas where you feel dry, tired, or empty.
- Ask God help you prioritise intimacy over activity.
- Pray for a deeper hunger for His presence, not just His provision.
- Ask for grace to slow down and make space for Him daily.
- Pray for your group, church, and families to be Spirit-filled, not just busy.
