Sermon Summary:
Nehemiah waited four months after receiving the burden and praying for an opportunity. During that waiting season, he continued serving faithfully where God had placed him. When the door finally opened, Nehemiah was afraid, but he didn’t allow fear to stop him.

When the king asked how he could help, Nehemiah prayed again, then boldly asked for what he needed. He had not only prayed, he had prepared. He knew what he was asking for and what would be required.

When he arrived in Jerusalem, Nehemiah didn’t rush. He inspected the broken walls, listened, and then invited the people to join him: “Let us rebuild.” The question for us is not whether we have the whole plan figured out, but what is the next obedient step?

What is the next obedient step?
Before God builds through us, He first builds something in us.

• He builds trust in the waiting.
• He builds courage in the fear.
• He builds wisdom in the preparation.
• He builds obedience in the next step.

Discussion Questions:

1. What are you doing while you wait?
   Nehemiah waited around four months between receiving the burden and having the opportunity to speak to the king. During that time, he continued serving faithfully where God had placed him. What are you currently waiting for? How might God be using the waiting season to prepare something in you, rather than simply preparing something for you?
2. How would it look to take a step of faith even while fear is still present?
   Nehemiah says, “I was terrified,” even though this was the opportunity he had been praying for. The message reminded us: Faith is not the absence of fear. Faith is obedience in the presence of fear. Have you ever assumed that feeling afraid meant you should not move forward? What would it look like to take a step of faith even while fear is still present?
3. What could “pray first, prepare faithfully” look like in an area of your life right now?
   Nehemiah had been praying for months, but when the king asked what he wanted, he was ready with an answer. He had considered timing, protection and provision. Why do you think we sometimes separate prayer and preparation? Which side do you tend to lean towards: Planning and trying to control everything, or praying but avoiding practical action? What could “pray first, prepare faithfully” look like in an area of your life right now?
4. What is your next obedient step?
   Nehemiah did not have every detail worked out before he moved. He simply took the next step. Is there something God has been prompting you to do where you are waiting for the whole plan before taking the next step? What is one practical step of obedience you could take this week?

Write down what you sense God is highlighting. Then take one practical step of obedience this week. It doesn’t need to be the whole plan. Just the next step.
